Probably Stolen Water Guide
Everything Probably Stolen currently documents about water — producing it, buying it and trading it — separated from the parts that are still guesswork.
Water in Probably Stolen has two documented sources. You produce it with a Moisture Farm, a machine that runs overnight into an attached container and outputs 6150ml of Pure Water per day. You buy it as a Sealed Water Ration (Standard) from the commissary for 30 Tokens.
Selling it is a whole product line: Water Merchant is one of the starting paths the store description names, and it comes with a catch: water brings liability, and must be tested and filtered.
Evidence level: Confirmed Every number here is read off official Steam screenshots. Nothing is estimated, and nothing is a community report. The Patch 48.3.10 material sits in its own section because it describes the Playtest build, not the store listing. Sources last checked August 21, 2026.
Producing water: the Moisture Farm

The figures below come from one official Steam screenshot — the production and storage view shown above, which leaves a full Moisture Farm tooltip open. It is the only place a machine's purchase price, output rate and energy cost are legible at the same time.
Moisture Farm tooltip Confirmed
| Purchase Price | 191 |
| Estimated value | 2187 (base value 2187) |
| Output volume | 6150ml Pure Water per day |
| Required energy | 12/Day (base 4/Day) |
| Operation | Overnight; requires a container and an energy source |
Read this before planning around those numbers: This unit had modules fitted — Performance +515%, Efficiency -200%, Quality +170% — so the output and energy draw are the modified figures, not the machine’s base performance. The base energy cost is shown separately as 4/Day.
That caveat matters more than the headline output: those figures are neither a base rate nor a confirmed maximum, and whether the listed price of 191 covers the machine with or without its modules is not stated. The Base Value: 2187 on the same tooltip is a price, not a rate — it does not tell you what an unmodified unit produces.
Two operating requirements come from the tooltip itself: the machine runs overnight, and it needs a container and an energy source attached. The other machines with readable panels are indexed in the wiki's machine and interface figures.
Trading water: the Water Merchant path
Water is not just a resource, it is one of the starting specialisations.
Tests, filters and resells water. Liability is the failure mode, and when in a sale that liability lands is not stated. That makes water the only starting line whose failure mode is liability rather than raids, inspections or addiction.
It is also not a one-time choice. Water merchant is one of the additional jobs you can master during a run, alongside hydroponic farmer and organ dealer, so you can pick up water as a second trade without starting over. The full comparison of every starting scenario is on the starting scenarios page.
What Playtest Patch 48.3.10 added for water
Two water questions the store description leaves open are answered by Playtest Patch 48.3.10 — Rock Bottom & Water Upgrade, published on 2026-08-06. It describes the Playtest build, not the store listing — and it stops well short of explaining what any of it does.
| Added | What the patch note states | What it does not state |
|---|---|---|
| Water trading guide Confirmed | Can now be bought from Dr. Jackson. | What it costs and what it teaches are not stated. |
| Wild Network upgrades Confirmed | Retired Water Merchant, Gutterflow on Tap and Rustwater on Tap are available in the open playtest. | What each upgrade does is not stated. |
The parenthetical on the upgrades line matters, because the names invite the wrong reading: “Retired Water Merchant, Gutterflow on Tap, Rustwater on Tap (Not the Water Trade Starting Scenario when starting a new game)”. These are Wild Network upgrades, not the Water Trade Starting Scenario. How you get them is not stated.
Buying water: the commissary ration
The commissary stock list, with prices legible, carries exactly one water item:
| Item | Tokens | In stock |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed Water Ration (Standard) Confirmed | 30 | 4 |
Two things to keep straight. First, commissary prices are paid in Tokens, a currency separate from the ¢ balance shown in the shop. The stock column is the count shown at that one moment; whether it restocks, and on what schedule, is unknown.
Second, the (Standard) suffix on the item name may suggest other grades exist. No source reviewed here names any of them, so treat the grade ladder as unconfirmed.
What is still unverified
This page deliberately stops where the sources stop. Every row below is an open question, not a hidden answer:
| Question | Current evidence |
|---|---|
| What does water sell for? Unknown | No sale price, price range or buyer appears in any source reviewed here. |
| How do you test water? Unknown | Testing is named as required by the store description. The machine, interface and cost behind it are not shown anywhere. |
| How do you filter water? Unknown | Same position as testing — stated as a requirement, never demonstrated in a source available here. |
| What happens if you skip it? Unknown | “Liability” is the word the store description uses. Whether that means a fine, a raid, reputation loss or a dead customer is not specified. |
| Where else can you buy water? Unknown | Only the commissary ration is confirmed. Other vendors, scavenge sources or customer offers are not documented. |
| What is the base Moisture Farm output? Unknown | Only the modified figure is shown. Base energy is given as 4/Day; base output is not. |
| How do you obtain those modules? Unknown | The Performance, Efficiency and Quality modules are visible in their slots, but nothing shows where they come from or what they cost. |
| Are there other water grades? Unknown | “Pure Water” and “Sealed Water Ration (Standard)” are the only named water items confirmed so far. |
Each row gets filled in once there is evidence behind it — not before. Playtest builds also get patched, so anything read off a marketing screenshot can shift between updates.
Probably Stolen water FAQ
How do you get water in Probably Stolen?
Two routes are documented. You can run a Moisture Farm machine, priced at 191, which produces 6150ml of Pure Water per day overnight into an attached container. You can also buy a Sealed Water Ration (Standard) at the commissary for 30 Tokens. Whether other water sources exist in the build is not verified here.
What does the Moisture Farm produce in Probably Stolen?
The tooltip reads 6150ml Pure Water per day, with a required energy of 12/Day. That unit had modules fitted — Performance +515%, Efficiency -200%, Quality +170% — so both figures are modified. Base energy cost is given as 4/Day; the unmodified output is not shown anywhere.
How much does the Moisture Farm cost in Probably Stolen?
The same tooltip lists a Purchase Price of 191 and an Estimated value of 2187, matching its base value of 2187. Whether that purchase price is fixed, vendor-dependent or changes across a run is not established.
Can you sell water in Probably Stolen?
Water Merchant is one of the starting paths in the Steam store description, and water merchant is also a job you can master later in a run, so trading water is clearly supported. Water brings liability, and must be tested and filtered. At which point in a sale that liability applies is not established. No sale price, buyer or margin has been verified here yet.
How do you test and filter water in Probably Stolen?
This is not verified. Water must be tested and filtered, but no source reviewed here shows which machine performs those steps, what they cost, when in a run they apply, or what happens if you skip them and sell untested water.
